Think again, if there is verbal abuse, name calling, anger rages and are ANY physical attacks, such as pushing, shoving, hitting, slapping or putting bruises on you - you are in a domestic explosive relationship. There are many factors, and is defined as one person in an intimate relationship using any means to control the other. Verbal, emotional, mental, sexual, financial, physical, economic, passive, spiritual or psychological abuse is described as using words to criticize, demean, or otherwise decrease the confidence of the victim. Calling you names, cussing at you, belittling you and mean-spirited aggression to have the last say. TO HAVE CONTROL! Are you not
permitted to go anywhere by yourself, or you are kept from visiting family or friends. Do you get calls to check up on you, ask where you have been, all the time?? Call your local police department to ask if they have a victim's advocate. An Ohio law permits you to have a victim advocate with you at all times in court during protection order proceedings. There are support meeting in most cities, and if needed the advocate will pick you up to take you to city hall or court.
By asking for a protection order you are not laying a criminal charge, and you do not need to make a criminal charge to get a protection order. However, if you are the victim of a type of domestic abuse that is also a crime you can choose to apply for a protection order, or lay a criminal charge, or do both. Acts of abuse which are also crimes include common assault, assault with intention of doing grievous bodily harm, indecent assault, rape, incest, attempted murder, malicious damage to property, pointing a firearm, and abuse of animals, to name a few.
